| Willis Anderson "Toby" Smith and Martha Ann (Mattie) Copeland were married October 22, 1879 in
Robertson County. On September 19, 1880, their first child, Alice Ester was born, and
the family soon left for Comanche County.
They stayed in Comanche County for about ten years. During this time, the next five children were born (four shown below). Calla Lily would also be born in Comanche in September 1890, and in October the family would again journey west with babe in arms. They moved to the Red Mud Community, just across the Dickens County line in Kent County. Here, the last three of nine children would be born at the homestead. The following pictures are from the book, "A Family Named Smith From A Place Called Red Mud - The Toby and Martha Smith Family Story," by Clifton Watkins, 1992 (out of print). Watkins is a great grandson of Toby and Martha. |
