Beth Santore's Grave Addiction site contains a great collection of pictures of unique cemeteries, haunted places, and historical sites. Included are pictures of the little Hoover Cemetery in Grove City, Franklin County, Ohio. Beth has graciously permitted me to update my older picture of John Hoover's marker with selections from her site.

The cemetery is located on the east side of Gantz Road, just north of Southwest Boulevard, in Grove City. It is very small, with one marker and a historic plaque honoring John Hoover. However, John's wife, Margaret and an infant, possibly a daughter, are also buried there. The cemetery is very well maintained by a local Boy Scout troop. The Stars and Stripes fly 24 hours daily in honor of John's service to his country.

A number of we researchers have corresponded with Judith Lee Hoover who lived about seven miles from the grave site. According to her records, John Hoover was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. From there he moved to Cynthiana, Kentucky, but finaly settled in Jackson Township, Franklin County, Ohio in 1807. According to Judy, his was one of the pioneer families of Franklin County along with families such as Gantz, Alkire, Smith, Sullivant, Seeds, and others who settled the area that became Grove City and surrounding area. The Hoover farm was in an area that was later known as Ziner Farm, a community of homes and condominiums. Mr. Ziner was a distant cousin of John's. The Hoover farm remained in the hands of relatives until it was sold after Mr. Ziner's death. John's historic plaque has more of his story and military service.

(Personal Note: Judith Lee Hoover, born 25 February 1939, passed from this earth 5 October 2008. Her close friend, Mary Conaway said that all of her genealogy papers have been given to the Southwest Library in Grove City, OH. Since Judy's lines originated in Jackson Township, Grove City, this was deemed the best thing to do so that her legacy could continue.)

The approach to the cemetery
The cemetery is easily identified from Gantz Road by the large cedar tree.
At left, outside the wrought iron fence, is the large stone holding the historic plaque.
