The following memorial service tribute to William Thomas Beall and some of his letters written home during the Civil War may be viewed in the USGenWeb.com/la/winn archives.
Memorial Service for William Thomas Beall (1839-1863). Held December 4, 1960
Almost 98 years after the death of William Thomas Beall, we, his descendants have met to honor him in a brief memorial service. He was 23 years, 3 months and 8 days old when he died and little is known about his short life. This sketch is based on information related by his widow and other relatives and on letters which he and other soldiers wrote home to their families during the Civil War. The letters are now (1960) in the possession of his grandchildren, George Foster and Mary Beall Holmes.
The paternal grandparents of William Thomas Beall were Hezekiah Beall and Daphney Dent of Georgia. His parents were George Columbus Beall and Lucinda McBride, who were married in 1835. William Thomas was born in 1839 in Mississippi. Later the family moved to Louisiana where in 1859 William Thomas married Rebecca Smith, the daughter of Willis Smith and Pinkie Foster. William and Rebecca lived near Rebecca's parents in Winn Parish about 15 miles from Winnfield not far from the Beech Creek Baptist Church.
On May 10, 1862 William and several young men of the community enlisted in the Confederate army at Monroe, Louisiana. William left his wife and young daughter, Mary, in the care of his father in-law, Willis Smith. Among these who enlisted along with William were his wife's brothers, Martin, John and Henry Smith and her sister's husband, Stephen Smith. All of these men remained together almost all of the time they were in the service. William was stationed in north Louisiana for several months. He went home on furlough a short time after he enlisted and once, Rebecca visited him in his camp at Camp Jackson. This was probably the last time they saw each other.
William T. was in poor health when he enlisted and improved very little. There was much sickness among the soldiers. Several of his acquaintances died while in camp during the summer and fall. As winter came on, William's regiment was sent to northeast Louisiana near the Mississippi River to defend the Vicksburg area. Their clothing and bedding were inadequate and rations were frequently short. William's general health continued to decline. Late in the year the regiment moved to Avery Island in south Louisiana and later to Franklin. During this time William heard of the pressing times in the state and frequently expressed with much anxiety his concern of his family's health and well being. Especially his wife, who was expecting the birth of their second child. On January 7, he received the welcome news that his son, William Columbus Beall had been born on December 23.
Fighting was going on between the armies of the north and south when William arrived on the scene and skirmishes and bombardments occurred with increasing frequency. William gave vivid accounts of these engagements in his letters, but if he participated directly in any of them, he did not mention the fact. On January 21, he wrote that he was ill and very weak. On February 6, his brother in-law, Henry Smith wrote to the family that William was in the hospital. On February 16, William wrote he had been in the hospital 16 days and had a good room and plenty of medicine but not enough to eat. In his next letter, written on March 1, William wrote that he had had the measles, but was recuperating. He had been moved from the hospital to a house which offered less protection from the cold. A week later, Henry Smith had the unwelcome duty of writing to Rebecca the news of her husband's death. William's condition grew worse after he was moved from the hospital and in spite of Henry's constant nursing he gradually sank and died at about 6 o'clock on the morning of March 8, 1863. He was dressed in his uniform and buried with a military service in a beautiful grove of live oaks somewhere near Franklin [St. Mary Parish].
William Thomas Beall's letters to his family reveal two outstanding characteristics--his complete trust in God's wisdom and his love and concern for his family. He rarely mentioned his hardships and troubles. Instead, he attempted to allay his family's fears and wrote often of his hopes for a happy future when he could return to his wife, children and friends. Rebecca, his beloved companion, as he called her, remained his widow for 74 years. She faithfully attended her two children, reared them to adulthood and lived to see many of the 147 descendants of this union. The descendants of this couple include: 2 children; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 73 great-great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-great-grandchildren. Of these descendants, 135 are now (1960) living.

Ambrose Lee Brantner was born April 5, 1863 in Montgomery County, Texas. He was the second youngest of George H. and Susannah Lambkin Brantner who emigrated from Maryland via Missouri and Tennessee, arriving in Texas about 1851. They eventually settled in the Petteway Community near Bremond in Robertson County, Texas.
It was in Robertson County that Ambrose (also called Brose and Bid) married Lugenia Emiline "Genie" Smith on October 2, 1890. Lugenia was born December 7, 1869, presumably in Winn Parish, Louisiana. She was the second youngest of eight children born to Pleasant S. and Maranda Amanda Smith (Smith married a Smith).
In 1900 Ambrose and Genie sold their 50-acre farm near Petteway and relocated to the Red Mud (Tap) community of Dickens County. Two of Genie's brothers, Willis Anderson "Toby" and Albert Smith had moved to Red Mud in 1890 and their brother, Columbus Jeff, and their widowed mother "Grandmother Smith" had followed.
The Brantners traveled by train to Abilene and hired a wagon and driver to take them the remaining 100 or so miles to Red Mud. The family of eight arrived at Toby and Martha Ann's dugout with two trunks, several boxes of dishes and tools, a feather bed, and a few other things. Toby and "Mattie" had eight children at the time, which made for a cozy situation. The Brantner family soon moved into a dugout on one of the McArthur boy's farm, then later moved into a roomier half-dugout just north of the Red Mud Cemetery.
Ambrose eventually bought 80 acres of cultivated land and a 50-acre hillside pasture just across the county line in Kent County. The hillside became known as the Brantner Sandhill. He built a half dugout eventually added a frame room to the entrance.
Ambrose and Genie had four boys and four girls. The first six children, born in Robertson County, were Carl Homer, Ray Lillian (Rankin), Reba Irene (Thornton), Ruth Imogene (Fry), Ruby May (Thornton), and Kay Parrak, while Coy Lee and John V. were born at their Red Mud home in Kent County.
Ambrose was a "handyman" as well as a farmer, and loved to graft fruit trees and grow vegetables. In 1906 he hauled lumber from Colorado City to add more rooms to the one room connected to their dugout.
Life went reasonably well for the family until 1914 when Lugenia became ill from gall stones, or possibly appendicitis. She developed complications from surgery and died January 23, 1914. She was 46, and is buried in the Red Mud Cemetery.
Ambrose became very despondent from the loss and traveled back to Robertson County, leaving the eight children, ages 8-20, to manage for themselves. He was away when Coy died in 1917 and Carl in 1918. Ambrose eventually returned to Red Mud but never regained leadership of the family, and the children continued to operate the farm until they were married.
Ambrose lived with son "Johnnie" and Opal Pierce Brantner in Girard, Kent County, Texas most of his remaining years. A majority of his descendants gathered in Girard in 1958 to honor him on his 95th birthday. He died that same year on October 30, having failed to recuperate from a broken hip operation. Following his funeral in the Girard Church of Christ, where he had been a member for 55 years, he was laid to rest in the Red Mud Cemetery alongside his wife and young sons.

Carl Homer Brantner was born October 6, 1891 in Robertson County, Texas. He was the oldest of eight children born to Ambrose and Lugenia Smith Brantner.
In 1900, at age nine, he accompanied the family to the Red Mud community, where they settled on a small farm (in Kent County).
Upon his mother's death in 1914, and his father's subsequent despondency, Carl assumed the family leadership of his seven siblings. Three years later, the brothers and sisters mourned the loss of their youngest member, Coy Lee, age 15, on January 28, 1917.
Almost two years later, Carl died December 13, 1918 as the influenza outbreak spread across the nation. Carl was 27 and had never married. Both sons were laid to rest beside their mother in the Red Mud Cemetery.

My Mother's Marriage:
"My mother, Faye married her high school sweetheart, George Vernon White, Jr. in 1935 at the courthouse in Hempstead [Waller] when they were still only 17. They told no one and continued to live in their separate homes. Then, two years later, they pretended to elope. The big secret was finally revealed in 1987 when Maye wanted to honor them for a 50th Wedding Anniversary. They finally came clean and admitted that they had already had their 50th two years before! They celebrated their 52nd at Disney World in keeping with the fantasy I suppose."

"A Tribute To Johnny Brantner"
A beautiful flower has gone to Heaven on a Beautiful Day last in December, 1995. Just after Santa had come and brought gifts for everyone.
A sad, sad day had come to our lives, for we knew when it happened that the Lord had come for He took with Him to heaven, a beautiful flower of ours, a flower that we all loved so much.
It's not so hard for us to understad why the Lord would want to take this great man to walk in peace for ever and ever and track his footprints in the sand.
A beautiful flower was taken from his home to make a home in heaven and decorate the throne.
Brothers and Sisters, our flower will bloom again. Johnny, he can't come back to us, but we can go to him.
So always walk with Jesus, for soon our boat will sail. Watch our steps alone in life and walk in the narrow trail.
By a Friend, B. J. Meadors

BN&RC RESIDENT TURNS 100
On December 31, 1911 Hubert Brantner was born in Petteway. When he was 16 of 17 years old he began driving a truck with his daddy hauling things in the Bremond area. That was in the late 1920's. After he married he moved to Houston in 1941. He continued to work in the hauling business working for Red Arrow Freight. He had a route for many years inside the city of Houston that allowed him to eat lunch at home everyday with his wife.
He retired in 1974 and started spending some time in Bremond (Petteway) on weekends. In 2000 he moved back to his place in the country where he lived until his legs quit working in his late nineties and he became a resident of Bremond Nursing & Rehab Center. Hubert was the oldest of 13 children and 7 are still alive.
Many of his family members will be in Bremond this Saturday (Jan. 7) to celebrate his 100th birthday at an Open House in the Activity Room at the Bremond Nursing & Rehab Center from 1pm to 4pm. In the picture Hubert talks about his long life during lunch on Wednesday in the cafeteria at the nursing home. He said one of the things that helped him live to be a 100 was that he "always got along with people."
