Britton and Angeline have a double marker in Duck Hill Cemetery. The listing has no death date for him. Widower Britton has not been located in 1920. The 1930 Census has him in the household of Ben, his son. He is listed as "Edd," father, which might be a clue to some of the "E" middle initials so prevalent throughout the family.
Angeline's marker indicates she was previously a Smith. The 1900 Census lists all seven children that reached majority, but states that Angie had lost three children prior to this.
Ben married Laura (unknown) about 1902. She was born 20 Jan 1883 in Mississippi and died 6 Jun 1956. Double marker in Duck Hill Cemetery. He named a son "Benjamin."
Britton Witcher married Elizabeth E. "Mattie" (unknown) about 1905. (Perhaps Mattie Elizabeth, but Mattie E. is the usual designation.) She was born 1883 in Mississippi and died 1950. Double marker in Duck Hill Cemetery. Mattie "wife" and two children appear in the 1920 Census in Madison County, Louisiana but Britton's name seems to have been omitted in the transition from the mulatto family last listed on the previous day to Mattie's entry the next day. The house number is also missing.
Elijah married Hettie Lott (1886-1959) about 1920. She is buried with "Lige" in Duck Hill Cemetery - double marker. She apparently married a Sullivan after Elijah died in 1939.
| Dewitt Talmadge listed Eupora, Montgomery, MS as his birth place. He indicated he attended one year
at A & M College of Mississippi at Starkville. It evolved into Mississippi State University. He was
working as Asst. Postmaster at Eupora when he registered for the WWI Draft, presumably 1917 (Reg. Card A,
which he signed as Dewitt T.). He indicated that he had a wife and child at that time. This and Census
data suggests he first married about 1914 but was single again in 1920.
He married Ruby G. (unknown) about 1924, and in 1930 they were in Arvada, Jefferson, Colorado; he was a postal employee, and Ruby, with a "post graduate education," was teaching in the public school. After Dewitt died in 1935, Ruby (widow with no dependents) enlisted with the Womens Army Corps (WACS) on 31 Jul 1944 in Denver. Previous to this, she is presumed to be the Ruby Embry on a passenger list, arriving in New York 13 Aug 1938 from Le Havre, France. |
Liddie has not been located following 1910 when she was 18 and still with her parents at Duck Hill.
Felix Everett listed Bellefontaine, Webster, MS as his birth place when he registered for the WW I Draft 5 Jun 1917 as single, living at Duck Hill, Montgomery, MS.
Leslie Clayton married Willie A. Woods. She was born about 1900 in Mississippi. In 1920, the couple was living with her widowed mother, Carrie Woods, in Winona, Montgomery, Mississippi. The cemetery listing shows he served in WW II (probably a military marker).
