| At an early age, Luther went to work for the large Matador and Spur ranches in Dickens and Motley
Counties. He was on a cattle drive in either Mexico or New Mexico when he proposed marriage to Ruby Brantner by
mail. They were married in Roswell, Chaves, New Mexico in 1923, presumably in the home of his brother and
her sister, Joe and Reba Brantner Thornton, who were operating a dairy there at the time.
